Manufacturing Test/Quality Engineer

Our client is a global leader in the development and advancement of multi-fuel processing and fuel cell technology committed to providing clean, safe and efficient power solutions. With offices located in Italy and the USA, our client is committed to advancing the commercialization of hydrogen fuel cell power modules for industrial vehicles, equipment and stationary applications, natural gas fuel cell power systems for cogeneration applications, and on-board gasoline fuel processors and fuel cell stacks for automotive applications. Our client currently has the following position available in its Detroit, Michigan location.



Our client is seeking a Manufacturing Test/Quality Engineer to join our team. The Manufacturing Test/Quality Engineer will participate in process development efforts, with a special focus on developing the necessary test requirements, author test procedure documents, and establish the test infrastructure to test and validate product to specifications. 

The engineer will work closely with the product, systems, manufacturing and quality staff to ensure that the tests being ensure the product compliance to specifications.  The engineer will also be challenged to improve and minimize the testing activity to reduce non-value added tasks and improve the cycle time. The person in this role will also work closely with the systems engineers to provide feedback and improve system design.


 


Essential Job Responsibilities:



  • Act as an in-house expert in all matters concerning system/subassembly test and quality.

·       Candidate would become involved in all aspects of product test and manufacturing processes including but not limited to the following:


o   Test Fixture Design, Construction and documentation


o   Define Test Processes and Create Test Procedures


o   Support ISO9000 and AS9100 Quality System


o   Provide Technical Support to Manufacturing Personnel


o   Support continued improvement of the product by driving improved mfg process and test methods;


·       Work closely with Design Engineers, Production Leads, Technicians, and Assemblers to drive improved quality of the products;



  • Provide technical training to personnel and suppliers;
  • Act as an in-house expert in all matters concerning system test and quality reporting;
  • Participate in system design activities on multiple product platforms to ensure the necessary testing infrastructure is considered early in the design phase;

·       Candidate would be expected to lead the effort for improved test processes and test infrastructure (fixtures, procedures, etc) in order to improve product quality and throughput.



  • Develop and propagate the use of 8-D failure analysis processes to address root cause.
  • Assist in diagnosing and solving field failures.

 


Job Qualifications: (required unless otherwise noted)


 


Educational Background and Previous Work Experience


 



  • BS in mechanical/electrical/chemical engineering with 5+ years experience.  MS or specialized training in reliability engineering preferred.
  • Previous hands-on experience with the development of complex electromechanical systems

 


Special Skills and Abilities



  • Basic knowledge of fuel cell technology.
  • Very good hands on and troubleshooting skills.
  • Experience with data handling software packages such as MS Excel, VBA, LabVIEW, MathCAD, Relex FRACAS.
  • Interdisciplinary experience in controls, electrical, software, systems engineering.
  • Familiarity with basic lab safety procedures/ policies required.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, plus high level of enthusiasm.

·       Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced changing environment with multiple and changing priorities.



  • Willing to travel to field locations in the US up to 10% of the time.  Flexibility with working overtime. 
  • Excellent interpersonal, problem solving and organizational skills.

 


Desirable Skills and Abilities



  • Exposure to Six-Sigma methodologies is helpful.

 


Physical requirements/work environment


·       Use of basic hand and diagnostic tools. 


·       Approximately 60% of time spent in manufacturing or testing environment,, 30% in office environment, 10% in the field.


 


Licenses Needed, Certifications, Special Training Courses


·       Six Sigma green belt is favorable, but not required.


 


Travel Required



  • Approximately 10% domestic travel.
