GENERAL SUMMARY
Responsible for technical performance evaluations and senior engineering support, with primary focus on the performance and improvement of solid fuel plants; identification of capital improvements; and technology development.
PRIMARY DUTIES
Provide appropriate senior engineering support to plants as requested.
Analyze plant and fleet O&M performance data and identify improvement opportunities. In coordination with Plant Management, recommend improvements (i.e., capital improvements, technologies, and/or processes) to plant owners for further development. When contracted, provide technical direction to implement these improvements.
Oversee plant and fleet performance (including Budget/Cost performance) data bases to support ongoing improvement efforts and Marketing/ Business Development initiatives.
Assist in the management of the Technical "Lessons Learned" process. Ensure that Plant Management and Supervisory personnel are aware of industry "Best Practices".
Review and comment on all plant Incident Reports.
Oversee improvement initiatives such as reliability centered maintenance (RCM) initiatives to identify and develop improvements to predictive, preventive, and spare inventory maintenance programs for increased reliability and availability.
Provide technical leadership and program coordination in plant performance analysis and testing. Assist plant staff in monitoring and improving unit efficiencies.
Research, identify, and justify performance improvements for all generating units.
Utilize industry resources to identify new and innovative techniques and best practices. Serve as champion for new techniques as appropriate.
Provide guidance to plant staff in the selection of and operation of monitoring/ diagnostic equipment.
Coordinate the collection of fleet power plant operational and maintenance data for support of generation technical programs.
Collect and maintain plant technical and operational information, providing it to those requesting or needing it.
Conduct technical analysis of operational performance, maintenance, and diagnostic data to identify and communicate abnormal conditions, assist in root cause analyses, recommend corrective actions and identify potential cost savings. (Troubleshoot plant performance issues)
Carry out additional duties as directed by the PPO Senior Engineer and the VP Organizational Support. SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY
This position operates from established and well known procedures performing duties independently under general direction and minimum supervision. Decisions are made within prescribed operating procedures and guidelines. The position encounters recurring work situations of high complexity, with occasional variations from the norm. This position has partial project budgetary preparation and compliance accountability. Contacts are normally made with others inside and outside the company, with customers, vendors, contractors, other departments, immediate associates and own supervisor. Contacts are usually made on own initiative concerning matters requiring explanation, discussion, interpretation or approvals.

SPECIFIC SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED
Must have a demonstrated capability to evaluate technical performance, identify potential improvements, develop appropriate technologies, and determine/apply "Best Practices" in technical areas.
A working knowledge of thermodynamics and power equipment performance and heat flow diagrams, combined with strong abilities to communicate both orally and in writing, knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, project management, and performance monitoring software are required.
Knowledge in the following areas is strongly preferred:
Ability to prepare cost benefit analysis to compare differing designs with respect to their impact on plant performance and operability
Familiar with FERC "Standard Market Design"
Knowledge of energy policies, issues and initiatives.
Ability to analysis process data via OSI PI or similar plant historian
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
Bachelor of Science Degree in an engineering discipline with eight years experience in power plant design, troubleshooting, operations and/or performance evaluation.
A minimum of five years experience as Plant Engineer or equivalent position in solid-fuel plants is required.
Design/engineering/operating experience with Powder River Basin Coal, Exhaust Emissions Control Systems (e.g., precipitators; scrubbers), fuel handling systems, and Supercritical Boilers is strongly preferred.
Experience with project scheduling and budgeting is desirable.
Professional Engineer registration is highly desirable.
WORK CONDITIONS
Normal working hours are 8:00a.m. to 5:00p.m. Monday through Friday. Work is performed both at a corporate office and on industrial sites requiring protective clothing and equipment. Extended hours may be required based on specific requirements. Travel up to 30-40% required.
